Samsung F490 and Samsung P720

Date December 31, 2007

Samsung F490 and Samsung P720 In Ukraine, the local Samsung team held a press conference for the new line of Samsung mobile phone models. The others were already well-known to the world at large but the F490 and P720 weren’t — most especially the latter

The Samsung F490 should rock a 5 megapixel camera with a gorgeously huge 3.2 inch touchscreen display. The 432 x 240 resolution screen should also complement all that touchy goodness with some tactile feedback (presumably that pseudo-haptic, click-based feedback that we saw on the Samsung F700 Croix). Details are slim at the moment, but we do know that this little beauty will be packing an HSDPA data connection (that’s right, it’s 3G). It’s probably not too much to believe that Bluetooth, external storage, and WiFi are in the cards for this handset either. Expect a price tag of around $600.

The lower-end Samsung P720 should check in around the same time as the F490, and seems to be a variant of the Samsung P520 Armani phone. With a 3 megapixel camera, 2.6 inch touchscreen (also with tactile feedback), and dual SIM card support, the Samsung P720 is lower-end, but not exactly low-end. Bluetooth? Check. MicroSD card? Yup. Price-point? Something like $500, maybe lower.

The two phones are slated for a Q1/Q2 2008 release, so they aren’t too far off on the horizon. And, we’ll most likely be seeing more of these two new touchscreen handsets with tactile feedback at CES 2008 in a couple weeks. Keep checking back for more details!

Ericsson technology enables new safety device launched by NTT DoCoMoEricsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) has announced that a brand-new security device with positioning capabilities, enabled by Ericsson technology, has been launched in Japan.

NTT DoCoMo, Inc., the Japanese telecoms giant, has launched a safety device that gets high-precision location information by using the GPS function. The device is designed to provide family members or authorities with positioning information or to enable location tracking when the user pulls the slide switch in a dangerous or emergency situation. The slide switch also triggers a crime prevention buzzer on the device.

The device is based on the U310 platform developed by Ericsson. The platform enables the modem and GPS functionality within the device, which is small enough to be carried inside a pocket or bag for easy activation in case of emergency.

Robert Puskaric, Head of Ericsson Mobile Platforms, says: “This shows that our platform technology is flexible and small enough to be implemented in devices other than the traditional mobile phone. We are also pleased to see that our platform has been included in a security device within the DoCoMo portfolio, as this proves its stability and quality.”

The product, CTG-001G, has been developed by Giant Electronics on behalf of DoCoMo, and was launched on the Japanese market on December 7.

Nokia N96 smartphone in the flesh!

Date December 26, 2007

Nokia N96The new Nokia N96 looks a lot like the form factor of the N81, which I really like. So this is what Nokia’s next flagship handset looks like? Quite honestly, there is nothing here that looks to be innovative or yells out “wow I have to have it.” Perhaps I should hold my judgments until the product is official announced.
